'Baywatch' To Become A Big Screen Comedy?

Here’s a very interesting headscratcher.

Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka — the 2009 Blacklist writers behind the upcoming David Gordon Green/Jonah Hill’s adventure comedy, “The Sitter” — have been hired by Paramount to write the screenplay for the studio’s feature adaptation of “Baywatch.” So we guess this thing will be a full on comedy given that “The Break-Up” co-writer Jeremy Garelick was hired to rewrite and direct the picture last July.

The idea of turning “Baywatch” into a comedy isn’t entirely a bad idea. The show itself was a joke but the tricky thing here is that the whole reason people watched “Baywatch” in the first place wasn’t for drama or laughs but for watching women in bathing suits. That’s the beginning and end of the “appeal” of the show. We can only imagine any feature film adaptation would be loosely affiliated with the show and will really just track the adventures of a wacky crew of lifeguards with David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson stopping by for their standard cameos.
