Actress Zendaya (“Dune: Part Two”) has been attached to a biopic about New York City pop singer Ronnie Spector (of the group The Ronettes) since 2020, and there is a massive update as they’ve landed a high-profile director for “Be My Baby.”
Variety has revealed that Barry Jenkins has been tasked as the director of the highly anticipated film from A24 that is expected to explore the life of the ’60s music icon.

An original script for the movie was written by Dave Kajganich (“Bones & All,” “Suspiria”), and Jenkins returns to A24 after “Moonlight” and the Sundance favorite “Sorry, Baby” (Jenkins served as a producer). Zendaya also reunites with A24, which was behind her HBO series “Euphoria” and the upcoming Robert Pattinson co-starring romantic comedy “The Drama.”
We’re also expecting to see Zendaya return for Denis Villeneuve‘s “Dune Messiah,” will appear in Christopher Nolan‘s action-packed Greek epic “The Odyssey,” and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that she has enough of an opening in her schedule to return as MJ in Marvel‘s “Spider-Man 4.”
This comes as James Mangold‘s Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown,” saw some success and awards consideration,” which starred Zendaya’s “Dune” co-star Timothee Chalamet, earning him a Best Actor Oscar nomination.
However, unlike Chalamet, Zendaya is going into the project with an established musical career after providing music to films like “The Greatest Showman“, and a project like “Be My Baby” is a near perfect role for her and always felt like a non-brainer.
With Ronnie cast, the next big step will be who they end up hiring as the rest of The Ronettes.
