Oh snap Yeezy, it looks like you weren’t the first one to cop to the Auto-tuned heartbreak of Bon Iver. If you’re not familiar with the name Bon Iver or his face, you’ve heard his music. Kanye West tapped the sensitive Wisconsin singer-songwriter to assist on his latest album My Dark Twisted Fantasy sampling Bon Iver’s track “Woods” on “Lost In The World” and the singer earned a co-writing credit on “Monster.” But damn, Judd Apatow was on this Bon Iver cat way before Yeezy hepped to the noise.
In an extensive, pretty fascinating profile on the singer-songwriter in the New York Times, it reveals that while Iver aka Justin Vernon licensed songs to a couple of television shows, he feared them getting appropriated for films. And when Judd Apatow came calling for a song for his 2009 film “Funny People,” the singer had trouble deciding what to do ultimately waiting too long forcing the director to look elsewhere.
“The album [For Emma, Forever Ago] became a pretty personal thing for some people,” Vernon said, “and I just didn’t want to be a part of ripping some of that away for anybody.”
Of course, Apatow had no problem at all filling out his movie with songs and as for Bon Iver he’s since gone on to become something of a sensation. His next album, Bon Iver Bon Iver (yeah, that’s what it’s called) is due on June 21st and Judd, if you want to use any of those songs for your next movie “This Is Forty,” you might want to give that guy a call now.
