Jason Schwartzman has made a career for himself in both major films and indie darlings. Throughout his filmography, you can see how he goes back and forth, effortlessly, to star in massive films like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” and then in smaller, more intimate indie films like the forthcoming “Between the Temples.”
As seen in the trailer, “Between the Temples” tells the story of a cantor who is going through his own mental health struggles. But then everything is flipped on its head when his former art teacher requests his services for a Bat Mitzvah. The film stars Carol Kane, Jason Schwartzman, Dolly de Leon, Caroline Aaron, Robert Smigel, Madeline Weinstein, and Matthew Shear. “Between the Temples” is directed by Nathan Silver, who co-wrote the script alongside C. Mason Wells.
We saw the film during this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and in our review, we said, “Ultimately, ‘Between the Temples’ is achingly, evenly deceptively sweet and from the heart. It’s a dexterously comic but moving examination of a life interrupted, seemingly demolished, and a life of unfulfilled dreams, clashing, colliding, and perhaps finding a tender togetherness that suggests second chances and no term limits on coming of age.”
“Between the Temples” is expected to arrive in theaters on August 23. You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
