Bill Hader Has Ideas For Films He’d Like To Direct Next Including A “'Barry'-Like” Horror

With “Barry” Season 4 officially debuting on HBO recently, it’s time to talk about the future. Well, the show doesn’t have much of a future, considering this is the final season. However, for star-writer-director-creator, Bill Hader, the success of “Barry” is likely going to be a huge help when he goes to a studio for his next project. And it appears that he already has ideas about what projects he’d like to make next.

Speaking to Deadline, Bill Hader talked about what he’d like to do in the future now that “Barry” is wrapping up its run on HBO. While he’s not exactly sure which project he wants to tackle next, he has a few different ideas. One thing is for certain, though—whatever the next project is, it’s going to be a feature film.

“I’ve written [a project] with Duffy Boudreau, one of the writers on the show,” said Hader. “We wrote a movie that I’d like to make at some point, which is kind of like what everybody usually does. They try to make a little, small thing. And then I have two other ideas. One is kind of hard to describe, and then the other one is ‘Barry’-like in tone, but instead of a crime thing, it’s like a horror thing.”

As for whether or not Hader would appear in front of the camera in any of the three films, it sounds as if he has plans for at least one of them to feature his face.

“The horror one, I would star in. The other two, as of now, I would not be in,” he added. “But I’ve done this before, where I’ve talked about things, and then once it gets out there, you’re almost really jinxing it. So, we’ll see. Always, the thing you’re concentrating on is the thing that kind of goes well, and then this thing over here that you’re half thinking about, that’s the thing that [takes off]. I mean, that’s what happened with ‘Barry.’”

Obviously, the one project mentioned above that sounds the most intriguing in the “horror thing” that has a “Barry”-esque vibe. With his success on “Barry,” anything in that vein seems like a great idea for Hader. Combine that with the fact that comedians have been killing it (no pun intended) with horror films lately (looking at you, Jordan Peele and Zach Cregger), it sounds like Hader could really break out in a big way as a filmmaker with his next project.

Regardless of what he picks next, a lot of attention will be given to Hader’s project. “Barry” came out of nowhere and shocked fans and critics alike. But the actor-filmmaker isn’t going to have the element of surprise with his next project.

“Barry” Season 4 is airing new episodes weekly on HBO.
