All movies should be put in context, and reviewed as such…
On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I leap in to hyperbolic fray of admiration for the latest, record-breaking Marvel movie “Black Panther” (see our fair, even handed B+ review here). We both find lots to admire and enjoy about the movie, but it’s still a Marvel product and suffers accordingly. Especially in its action heavy climax. And so, we discuss the film and its reaction around the globe — an undeniable cultural victory for so many obvious reasons — but we do find plenty to worry about and criticize. We hope you hear us out and maybe even understand our concerns about these massive Disney products that are gobbling up so many crazy-talented filmmakers.
LISTEN: AYT talks the 4th season of “Black Mirror” and 1989 gem “Miracle Mile.”
On the back half of the show, we get into our latest edition of HOLD UP by looking back at Rian Johnson‘s first film, “Brick.” It’s a fascinating one to go back and re-examine, especially in light of Johnson’s work on “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” He and “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler (an AYT favorite) have taken similar paths in their careers thus far, so it’s a fun combo to pair up.
