Got a Tip?

Bong Joon Ho To Direct An Animated Fantasy Film About Sea Creatures

Bong Joon Ho has never been a filmmaker that has shied away from working in genre filmmaking. He’s made features about a train in a post-apocalyptic future, a giant super pig, and a literal amphibious monster. So, while it is a little surprising that one of his upcoming new directorial projects is an animated film about sea creatures, it definitely still fits within the trajectory of his filmography.

According to ScreenDaily, Bong Joon Ho is set to direct a Korean animated film about the drama between humans and creatures living in the sea. The film is going to be a CGI-animated film that will find Bong collaborating with VFX studio 4th Creative Party to bring it to life. While it’s unclear when we might see the film come to cinemas, the report claims that it will be the filmmaker’s “next project after his next.”

Apparently, this untitled animated film is a project that Bong Joon Ho has been working on since at least 2018. He recently finished the script earlier this year and is now ready to move forward with scheduling the production. While the studio might not be a household name in the US, 4th Creative Party has worked with Bong on a number of films previously, including handling the VFX for features such as “The Host,” “Snowpiercer,” and “Okja.” The studio also worked on Park Chan-wook’sOld Boy,” “Stoker,” and “The Handmaiden.” Quite the filmography for one studio, right?

Again, it’s unclear when we might see this untitled animated film come to cinemas around the world. But with Bong Joon Ho attached and the pedigree of 4th Creative party, we can’t be anything less than excited to see what they cook up.
