Bong Joon-Ho's ‘Snowpiercer’ Will Open The L.A. Film Festival On June 11th

Snowpiercer

I can’t remember the last time the media squawked so hard over a movie. It seemed like there was two years of fighting over “Snowpiercer,” Bong Joon-ho’s sci-fi thriller that’s been seen over most of the world and not North America. Harvey Weinstein owns the right and there was a protracted battle over the length of the movie that had bloggers crying foul over his “Scissorhands” ways.

In the end, the movie is coming out as the director intended, but it’s a smaller release than originally thought. TWC Radius, the VOD arm of The Weinstein Company, is releasing the snowbound apocalyptic tale in theaters on June 27th in New York and L.A. and presumably it’ll be out on VOD that same weekend.

The movie that stars the international cast of Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Alison Pill, Ed Harris, Ewen Bremner, Korean actors Song Kang-ho, Ko Ah-sung and more, has been picked to open the L.A. Film Festival on June 11th, so the west coast will get the North American premiere slightly earlier than the Radius street date. It’s been touted as a masterpiece and some of us agree with that, and some of us that think that’s way too overstated. Either way, you’ll get to make up your own mind soon (if it hasn’t been made up already site unseen). The L.A. Film Festival run June 11-19. The full line-up will be announced May 6th.
