When Troy Duffy arrived in 1999 with his directorial debut “The Boondock Saints,” he was arguably behind the times. The preceding years had seen countless imitators follow in the footsteps of Quentin Tarantino, with violent, dialogue heavy genre movies, but against all odds, Duffy managed to succeed. “The Boondock Saints” isn’t actually any good — it’s crass, dumb, and fairly forgettable — but it managed to find an audience and even prompted a way too late sequel in 2009, “The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day,” also from Duffy. Now, the filmmaker is following his nearly once-per-decade film trend and getting a new project going.
Duffy will return behind the camera to direct “The Blood Spoon Council,” which he also co-wrote with Criss Lassiter. This film also has a very ’90s sounding premise, as it follows a vigilante group, known as the Blood Spoon Council, who are hunting down and executing serial killers in the U.S. The FBI then commissions a young, rogue profiler to get into the head of the group’s elusive leader, but their investigation is derailed when the whiz kid engages in a secret game of cat-and-mouse with a mastermind the likes of which he’s never seen.
Duffy has never been the most nuanced of filmmakers, so don’t expect anything too complex here. For those of you who remain ‘Boondocks’ fans, the director is apparently working on a third installment, and also a TV series, “The Boondock Saints: Origins.” Duffy also has other feature films in the works including “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em” (which he describes as a “90 minute ballet of hardcore ass-kickery”) and the racially edgy comedy “Black Ghost,” which he is co-writing with Cedric The Entertainer. Well, you can’t fault the guy for ambition….right?
