Shed a tear and light a candle (or whatever it is that you do when you lose something) — there are only eight episodes of “Breaking Bad” to go. The cherished series comes to an end this summer and Walter White and Jesse Pinkman will find their fates decided. But that world may not be closed entirely. Last summer, “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan said, “I would love to see a Saul Goodman spinoff. I can’t say that it is genuinely in the works at this moment, but certainly Bob Odenkirk and I have talked about it a little bit.” And while he remained cautious about it happening, it’s not so farfetched…
Deadline reveals that Sony TV are “exploring” the idea of a Saul Goodman show but that “it’s in its nascent stages” and there are no deals or anything else signed. Basically, it seems to be a case of “well, that’s potentially interesting.” Certainly, once the show bounces it will leave a big gap to be filled, but keeping that core audience tuned into to another show centered around a different character is likely very intriguing. And oh yeah, we suppose it means that whatever madness happens in the series finale, Saul will be okay.
As for what the show will actually be about, again, no details except that it will likely be a comedy, but Gilligan did offer some loose concepts. “I like the idea of a lawyer show in which the main lawyer will do anything it takes to stay out of a court of law,” Gilligan said. “He’ll settle on the courthouse steps, whatever it takes to stay out of the courtroom. That would be fun — I would like that.” And, yeah, it definitely sounds like Saul.
As much as we usually abhor this kind of stuff, Saul is a great character and we could see a pretty fascinating show being built around him. In Gilligan we trust? Let’s just see how he sticks the landing for “Breaking Bad” first.
