Unless you’re a comic book nerd (like, um, me), you might not be aware of Brian K. Vaughan’s work, even though he’s dabbled in TV and films, as a writer on the last few seasons of “Lost” and the short-lived series “Under the Dome,” to name a couple of projects. However, Vaughan is probably best known by many as the man responsible for comic series like “Saga,” “Paper Girls,” “Ex Machina,” and “Y: The Last Man.” Each of these are incredible examples of the comic book medium and it’s because of this, it’s exciting to see that the writer has signed on to adapt “Gundam” for the big screen.
Deadline is reporting that Legendary has signed Brian K. Vaughan to write the live-action adaptation of the classic Japanese franchise, “Gundam.” The film, which will be based on the “Mobile Suit Gundam” anime series, tells the story of the crew that works on the massive giant robot that is crucial in the conflicts between territories. The animated series spawned all sorts of spin-offs and sequels, and quickly became one of the most influential franchises in sci-fi.
With films like “Pacific Rim” and its sequel, as well as the ‘Gozilla vs. Kong’ franchise, proving that the technology finally exists for a massive undertaking like “Gundam” to be done, it’s exciting to see that such a talented writer has been tasked with adapting the story.
For those that aren’t big nerds like me, trust that Vaughan is a very capable person when it comes to writing epic stories. Look no further than something like “Saga,” which tells the story of a war between alien races that spans the universe, for proof that the writer knows his way around a sci-fi story with huge stakes. But the thing that separates Vaughan from other writers is his penchant for putting incredible amounts of heart into his work, with the characters becoming the focus, and not the explosions.
All that being said, it would seem like Legendary knows which direction they want to go with “Gundam,” and we can’t help but be excited with Vaughan’s involvement. Now, let’s just hope they keep Michael Bay away from this robot franchise.
