“Burning” is a film we’ve been anticipating for a while now. It’s been almost a decade since filmmaker Lee Chang-dong released his brilliant film, “Poetry,” which won the screenplay award when it competed in official competition at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. Now, 8 years later, the director is back at Cannes with his latest film, and we have a new trailer, as well as a couple clips.
Lee Chang-dong’s “Burning” tells the story of a young man, who becomes entranced when he meets a mysterious woman and her affluent boyfriend. The film is based on the Haruki Murakami short story “Barn Burning,” and recently premiered as part of the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

In the trailer, we get a general idea of the plot, but the footage does an excellent job of painting a larger picture. The tension surrounding the three main characters is palpable, and “The Walking Dead’s” Steven Yeun seems to be bringing his A-game as the affluent boyfriend that doesn’t seem to be completely on the up-and-up.
The clips further show that “Burning” is a film that deserves everyone’s attention, as you see the sort of “meet-cute” between two of the main characters, as well as another scene featuring Yeun. The second clip also introduces the idea of the North Korean border, which plays a role in the overall plot of the film.
Ultimately, this new footage furthers our idea that “Burning” will be another strong entry in Lee Chang-dong’s filmography, and is a must-see film coming from Cannes.
