'Cabinet Of Curiosities': Boots Riley, Issa López & More Lead Guillermo Del Toro's Wishlist For Season 2 Filmmakers

It’s only been a few short weeks since the release of “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” on Netflix. However, over that time, the anthology horror series has already earned its fair share of viewers and love from the genre film community. Mostly, people are excited to see the curated list of exciting filmmakers that Guillermo del Toro has pulled together for Season 1. And even though Season 2 is likely far away, the filmmaker is already compiling his list of filmmakers he’d like to approach for Season 2.

In a new interview with IndieWire, Guillermo del Toro was asked if he already was thinking about a list of filmmakers to approach for ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ Season 2. Not only does he have a list already, but del Toro teases that many of the names are folks who unfortunately couldn’t commit to Season 1 due to scheduling issues.

“I have a list,” del Toro explained. “For example, we tried to get Jayro Bustamente before and he couldn’t because of COVID. When you think about Mexican filmmakers, there’s Issa López. She was going to direct one of the episodes when she got ‘True Detective’ and she couldn’t do it. Boots Riley wrote and was going to direct one episode and he got his series greenlit. I could go and spoil the entire second season for you, but I’m not going to do that.”

Larry Fessenden is one hundred percent at the very very top of my list for a second list,” he added. “Larry is one of those names that back in the days of the Spirit Awards I fought for him to be nominated with ‘Habit,’ which I think is phenomenal. I’ve been in touch with him since then. We were very close to remaking ‘The Orphanage.’”

Obviously, folks like Riley and López are still busy with their series commitments, so it’s unclear if their schedules will allow for ‘Cabinet’ time. However, if del Toro is able to land them, as well as Bustamente and Fessenden, then you’re looking at a Season 2 that might possibly exceed the star power of Season 1. If anyone can make it happen, you have to assume del Toro is that person.

“Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” Season 1 is now available on Netflix.
