The conventional wisdom is that the massive San Diego Comic-Con is to serve as a launchpad for tentpole movies and television programs that will be hitting big and small screens over the next twelve to twenty-four months. But it looks like attendees this year will get a chance to see a promising show that was canceled (and hopefully will be revived if the word proves to strong).
Deadline reports that the Mark Romanek directed pilot episode of “Locke & Key” — that was being eyed as a potential fall series on Fox — will screen at Comic-Con. “War of the Worlds” writer Josh Friedman was shepherding the project, about a family who moves into a mysterious New England home, with Miranda Otto (”Lord of the Rings”) and Nick Stahl (”Terminator 3”) among the cast. The series was initially being eyed for a summer run, before switching as a possible fall program but eventually, the pilot didn’t make the cut. Fox tried shopping the show to other networks, but no one came aboard and eventually “Locke & Key” was killed.
IDW Publishing, the company behind the Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez penned graphic novel on which the show is based, got permission from Fox to bring the show to San Diego, where it will screen on July 22nd at 10:30 AM, and will be followed by a panel. IDW will use the platform to perhaps promote whatever the next entry in the series will be, of course, they’ll likely be hoping that the response is strong enough to get networks interested in the show again. All that we know is that we’d love to see it and we hope that at some point it’s made available so we can check out (especially since new work from Mark Romanek seems to be few and far between).
