Kicking off on May 16, the Cannes Film Festival is around the corner, and the lineup was announced this morning alongside the names of six female filmmakers that will be participating this year that have films in competition. It’s a small number, but a new record for the festival. Those names include Alice Rohrwacher, Jessica Hausner, Kaouther Ben Hania, Catherine Breillat, Justine Triet, and Ramata-Toulaye Sy, with a rare debut feature, “Banel Et Adama.”
That group features established names and Cannes alumni bringing their latest films to the festival, such as Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera,” her fourth film to bow at the festival. Hausner’s “Club Zero” is an impressive fifth Cannes premiere, the documentary drama “Olfa’s Daughters” from Kaouther Ben Hania is another strong highlight, and Breillat a grand return to filmmaking after making after a ten-year break from the festival with “Last Summer.” Lastly, there’s Triet’s latest festival entry, “Anatomy of A Fall.”
The festival boasting a record number of female directors at this year’s event isn’t terribly remarkable as Cannes’ track record for representation has never been great, and there’s still a significant imbalance with male peers getting the most attention and expected to get the bulk of the press coverage. However, having a growing number of female filmmakers (6 out of 19 directors so far, more in competition titles will surely be announced) getting their chance to showcase their work on an international stage like the Cannes Film Festival is always going to be exciting and welcomed. Hopefully, the number of women will increase in subsequent festivals. Baby steps, one supposes.
