The 2023 Cannes Film Festival ends tomorrow, but awards for the fest start today, at least in the Un Certain Regard category. With John C. Reilly presiding as Jury president, and Paula Beer, Davy Chou, Alice Winocour, and Émilie Dequenne as fellow jurors, announced their winners today on la Croisette. And the winner of the Uncertain Regard Prize?
It’s Molly Manning Walker‘s debut film “How To Have Sex,” about three British teens who go on a rite-of-passage holiday that ends up much more sobering than the girls expect. The Playlist’s review of Walker’s feature praised the film, calling it “an assured, fresh contribution to the recent array of promising British debuts.” And with its victory today, expect Walker to get the premiere theatrical release treatment later this year, not unlike Charlotte Wells‘ debut “Aftersun” did last year.
As for the Un Certain Regard’s Jury Prize, that went to Moroccan director Kamal Lazraq for “The Hounds,” a gritty crime drama that takes place in modern-day Casablanca. Asmae El Moudir, another Moroccan filmmaker, went Best Director for her latest doc, “The Mother Of All Lies.” Meanwhile, Sudanese director Mohamed Kordofani went the Freedom Prize for his debut drama feature”Goodbye Julia.”
