While Todd McCarthy and Jeff Wells seem to be raving over Oliver Assayas’ “Carlos,” a five-and-a-half hour epic about ’70s international terrorist Carlos The Jackal as played by Venezuelan actor Édgar Ramírez best known for his role as a CIA assassin in the movie “The Bourne Ultimatum” and a small role in “Che,” not everyone is as enthused.
We pinged our man Kevin Jagernauth on the ground in Cannes and asked, “McCarthy is saying it’s everything ‘Che’ should have been and hoped to be, thoughts?”
Our man says: “In short, McCarthy is wrong — but I also think ‘Che’ was really underrated by critics — ‘Carlos’ is 2/3 great, 1/3 pretty dry/unfocused. Also, the soundtrack for this is really, really bad. Thankfully not used often, but completely wrong for the picture.”
Hmm. We’ll hopefully get the entire report later today. We kinda await with baited breath as the rest of us greatly anticipate this picture. The film hits theaters later this year via IFC Films in conjunction with the Sundance channel that will air it on TV as a mini-series.
