Got a Tip?

Chad Stahelski Had A “Nice Talk” With Kevin Feige About Directing A Marvel Film But Only Wanted To Do ‘Blade’

In terms of modern-day influence on a genre, you would be hard-pressed to find a more influential film than “John Wick.” Since that film’s release in 2014, “John Wick” has gone on to be the film that most action features since have tried to emulate. From the fight choreography to the revenge story to just about everything else, studios and filmmakers have tried to copy (mostly failing) what director Chad Stahelski and his crew were able to do nearly a decade ago. That has catapulted Stahelski to the top of the list for many studios hoping to find filmmakers to lead new franchises. And yes, even Marvel Studios had its eye on Stahelski.

Speaking to Comicbook.com, Chad Stahelski talked about his relatively recent talks with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. It’s important to remember that Stahelski and his famous production company helped with some notable Marvel films in the past, including “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War.” So, there is plenty of history there.

Apparently, after the success of “John Wick: Chapter 3,” Marvel Studios’ boss sat down with the filmmaker to discuss possibly working together again in the future. There was one problem, though. You see, Stahelski is only interested in one film, which currently has someone else attached to helm.

“Marvel was very influential in my career. I owe them a great deal. Kevin [Feige] is an awesome guy and I’ve worked for him many times on second unit,” Stahelski explained. “After ‘John Wick 3,’ he was nice enough to carve out a big chunk of time and have nice talk. He’s been a…in a way…a very strong mentor, even though it was a short period of time. I’ve only talked to him a few times, but he has been very influential in mindset and how to do it.”

He added, “And he actually asked me, ‘What could we ever do?’ I was like, ‘Look, I’m not going to lie to you. I don’t know if I fit that kind of studio mold, but ‘Blade‘ would be the one interesting thing I’d like to do.'”

As you probably are aware, “Blade” is currently one of the big films Marvel Studios is working on. The film is set to star Mahershala Ali and is directed by Bassam Tariq. Unfortunately for Stahelski, he is a bit late to the “Blade” party. That said, you have to assume Marvel Studios would like to see the filmmaker work on any number of other projects, as Stahelski is one of the most sought-after directors today. This isn’t the first time Stahelski has mentioned wanting to do “Blade,” but it is the first we’re seeing him talk about actually meeting with Feige about a project.

Alas, the bad news for Marvel Studios is that Stahelski is currently wrapping up work on “John Wick: Chapter 4” and is likely going to be busy working on “John Wick 5” shortly after that. So, unless Marvel wants to wait a number of years, it’s not likely that we’ll see the director take on a superhero film anytime soon.

“Blade” is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 3, 2023. “John Wick: Chapter 4” is expected to hit theaters on March 23, 2023.
