The British Academy of Film and Television announced the winners of the 2020 British Academy Television Awards and, like their counterparts across the pond a year ago, HBO and Sky’s “Chernobyl” was the big winner. That being said, there were some major surprises. And we’re not just talking about the awkwardness of a televised ceremony where winners chimed in via zoom.

While “Chernobyl” took nine BAFTA TV honors including seven from the BAFTA TV Craft Ceremony on July 17. The new statues were in the competitive Mini-Series and Leading Actor (Dramatic), for Jared Harris, categories. The Craig Mazin series won 10 Emmy awards last September.
Something of a surprise was Ava DuVernay’s “When They See Us” taking the International honor over “Succession,” “Euphoria” and “Unbelievable.” Netflix’s “The End of the F**king World” also earned two big wins in the Drama Series category (over “The Crown”, no less) and in Supporting Actress (Drama), for Naomi Ackie.
BAFTA shockingly turned its nose up at “Fleabag’s” second season overall, but still honored Sian Clifford with a Supporting Actress (Comedy) award.
Additionally, Idris Elba was honored with a special award for championing diversity in the industry.
