Without a doubt, HBO’s “Chernobyl” is one of the best series of the year, and if you believe some people, one of the best of the decade, century, or all time. Regardless, everyone can agree that it’s really damn good, and deserves all of the praise coming its way. And now that the series has caught on with audiences, it appears that the actual site of the tragedy is seeing a rise in popularity, as well. Unfortunately, some of the tourists are causing the series’ creator a bit of concern.
According to a new report from CNN, “Chernobyl” has caused an uptick of almost 35% at one company that does tours of the tragic location. People are so inspired by the series, probably many of which never even knew the details of the story, that they want to take a trip to the actual location to see the end result for themselves.

However, it appears that some of the tourists are being disrespectful, taking selfies and doing what annoying humans do in 2019. This has prompted the series’ creator Craig Mazin to go to Twitter, in an attempt to plead with fans who are making the trek.
“It’s wonderful that #ChernobylHBO has inspired a wave of tourism to the Zone of Exclusion. But yes, I’ve seen the photos going around,” he tweeted. “If you visit, please remember that a terrible tragedy occurred there. Comport yourselves with respect for all who suffered and sacrificed.”
It’s a sad state of affairs when people have to be told how to conduct themselves while at the site of a terrible tragedy. But hey, social media in 2019 is an awful place, huh?
All episodes of “Chernobyl” are available now on HBO.
