'On Chesil Beach' Trailer: Saoirse Ronan Faces Her Honeymoon

It seems that the range and limits of Saoirse Ronan’s talents know no bounds. She has played just about every type of character from a mysterious vampire in “Byzantium,” to the perfect assassin in “Hanna,” to an American teenager ready to take on the world in Greta Gerwig’sLady Bird,” and now a timid and sexually repressed newlywed in the upcoming “On Chesil Beach.” Here’s the official synopsis:

Adapted by Ian McEwan from his bestselling novel, the drama centers on a young couple of drastically different backgrounds in the summer of 1962. Following the pair through their idyllic courtship, the film explores sex and the societal pressure that can accompany physical intimacy, leading to an awkward and fateful wedding night.

The 23-year-old Irish actor has already been nominated for three Oscars, is currently taking the awards circuit by storm, has four films slated for a 2018 release, and looks to stun again in “On Chesil Beach.” The film first premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival with many reviews praising Ronan’s performance in it, including The Playlist’s.

The film reunites Ronan with “Atonement” author Ian McEwan after her breakout turn in the book’s film adaptation. The actor praised McEwan and spoke about working with him again saying, “[T]his time to be so familiar with his work and his voice and how he writes and to see that translate into a screenplay and getting the chance to work with him on that a little bit in rehearsals was wonderful.”

In addition to Howle and Ronan, the film also stars Emily Watson, Anne-Marie Duff, Samuel West, and Adrian Scarborough. “On Chesil Beach” was adapted by Ian McEwan from his own award-winning novella and directed by Dominic Cooke. “On Chesil Beach” opens on May 18th.
