English language remakes of celebrated European films have had a tough go of it recently, but Hollywood producers keep trying. There’s always a chance for a chance for the next “CODA,” “The Upside,” or “The Ring.” The latest movie to get a makeover is Thomas Vinterberg’s “Another Round,” which won the 2021 Academy Award for International Film and earned a Directing nomination for Vinterberg. Who will direct this new version? Why, none other than Chris Rock.
A somewhat surprising choice, Rock is best known behind the camera for helming the critically acclaimed “Top Five” in 2014. He also directed 2003’s “Head of State” and 2007’s underrated “I Think I Love My Wife.” His recent acting credits include “Rustin,” “Dolemite Is My Name” and the 4th season of “Fargo” which aired in 2020. Rock has earned four Emmy Awards and three Grammy Awards for his standup specials and “The Chris Rock Show.”
The original film featured Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang, and Lars Ranthe as four Danish high school teachers who challenge each other to an experiment to stay inebriated throughout the day. The idea is that if they are buzzed, they will be more energetic and creative for their students. Needless to say, the results are not ideal. How this storyline will play out in an American setting remains to be seen.
According to Deadline, Stuart Blumberg (“The Kids are All Right”) has already written a draft, but a new writer will be brought on board to work with Rock. The new movie will be produced by Appian Way’s Jennifer Davisson and Leonardo DiCaprio as well as Makeready’s Brad Weston and Collin Creighton. It’s unclear if DiCaprio will consider a role in the production.
Rock is reportedly making directing a priority. He’s also attached to an adaptation of Jonathan Eig’s novel “King: A Life,” about Martin Luther King, Jr. for Universal Pictures.
