It may be a sign that you’re growing old and losing touch with the next generation of young people when you talk about “remote drop” movies, but it’s still a good term to use when you discuss those films that you can’t help but watch, no matter what else you’re doing. It comes from an idea of this ancient form of TV watching, dubbed “channel surfing,” where you would sit and cycle through channels until you find something interesting to watch and drop your remote. For Christopher Nolan, the acclaimed and beloved filmmaker and seemingly a good judge of cinematic quality, one of those “remote drop” films that makes him stop in his tracks is none other than a Will Ferrell comedy about racing.
Speaking on the Rich Eisen podcast, Christopher Nolan was asked to name a “remote drop” film. Again, that’s a movie that makes him stop what he’s doing and watch, never thinking about changing the channel or putting on something else. For Nolan, he obviously thinks of Stanley Kubrick works, but then he mentions a film that will probably surprise many.
“I mean, god, anything by [Stanley] Kubrick, you know? It’s a remote drop,” said Nolan. “And some of the great comedies too, I mean ‘Talladega Nights,’ I’m never gonna be able to switch that up.”

Yes, we need to add “Talladega Nights” to the growing list of surprise Nolan favorites. The Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly comedy is a favorite amongst many, especially those who love the era of raunchy, immensely quotable 2000s comedies. But we must admit, it’s not something we would consider Nolan, the auteur filmmaker, to be a fan of. That said, it’s not the first time Nolan has spread the good word about a film that would surprise people.
Christopher Nolan is already an outspoken fan of the “Fast & Furious” franchise, picking ‘Tokyo Drift’ as his favorite of the bunch. He has also talked about his love of “MacGruber,” the Will Forte comedy that is a cult classic. So, again, we are going to add “Talladega Nights” to the list and continue to marvel at how Nolan clearly has a soft-spot for ridiculous comedies and outrageous action spectacles.
If you want to see Nolan’s latest film, “Oppenheimer,” definitely not a raunchy comedy, you can do so in theaters now.
