‘Coco 2’: Disney CEO Bob Iger Announces New Pixar Sequel In 2029

Yet another Pixar sequel is on the way, according to Disney CEO Bob Iger. Iger announced at the The Walt Disney Company‘s annual shareholders meeting that “Coco 2” is on the way, with plans for the film to hit theaters in 2029.  It’s the fifth Pixar sequel currently in development, after Toy Story 5,” “Incredibles 3,” and two more “Frozen” movies.

“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure,” Iger told shareholders. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.”

The original “Coco” team returns for the 2029 follow-up, including director Lee Unkrich, co-director Adrian Molina, with Mark Nielsen producing. “Coco” won two Oscars: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“Remember Me”). It also won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, Animated, a BAFTA for Best Animated Film, and a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Animated Feature and Best Song.

“Coco 2” may be good news for fans of the 2017 film, but not so much for audiences hoping Pixar’s future would hold more original projects. But sequels and familiar IPs may be the name of the game for the animation studio after the huge success of “Inside Out 2” last year, which ended up the highest-grossing film of 2024 (and the highest-grossing animated film ever, until “Ne Zha 2” took that crown this past February). And recent original Pixar films haven’t been big hits for Disney either. “Toy Story 5” and other Pixar sequels were already in the pipeline before the success of “Inside Out 2” due to “Onward,” “Turning Red,” and “Elemental” faring poorly with critics and audiences. In that case, “Coco 2” is a safer bet than another original IP, complete with a target audience of fans who, now teens and adults, want to catch up with an older Miquel and his family, similar to the older Riley in “Inside Out 2.”

But then, “Coco 2” is four years away, and plenty can change between then and now. Until we hear otherwise, though, it’s another sequel in Pixar’s queue, for better or worse.
