Films about estranged fathers reconnecting with their sons and/or daughters are a dime a dozen in Hollywood. But for as worn out as that story might seem, we promise that you’ve never seen that premise tackled quite like in the upcoming film, “Come to Daddy.”
With the film hitting select theaters this weekend, we’re thrilled to offer our readers an exclusive look at a clip from “Come to Daddy,’ which actually illustrates just how strange and surprising the new film is. As mentioned, the film follows a young guy, Norval (Elijah Wood), who attempts to reconnect with his estranged dad. However, once he meets his father, Norval quickly realizes that his dad is a bit of an ass, which is evident in the clip below. But that’s just the beginning.
While many people might still think of Elijah Wood as the lead actor from Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” films, around these parts, it’s his post-Middle-earth career that has really raised a few eyebrows and excited us. Not only has he starred in great films like “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore” (seriously, find it and watch it!), but he has been a producer on some of the best, most underrated films of the past several years, including “Mandy,” “The Greasy Strangler,” “A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night,” and the upcoming “Color Out of Space” to name just several.
In addition to Wood, the film stars Stephen McHattie, Martin Donovan, Michael Smiley, Madeleine Sami, and Simon Chin. “Come to Daddy” is written by Toby Harvard and directed by Ant Timpson. The film marks the feature directorial debut for Timpson, who previously was best known as a producer on truly great films like “The Greasy Strangler” and “Turbo Kid” (give us the “Turbo Kid” sequel, already!).
We saw the film at last year’s Tribeca, and in our review, we said, “Provocative and ballsy, its filmmakers probably have had their share of toxic relationships, and ‘Come to Daddy’ doesn’t give a shit if you like it and perhaps even dares some audiences to sit through it unfettered. Ultimately, it knows that those who stay are on its weirdo wavelength and are in for something insanely entertaining.”
“Come to Daddy” arrives in select theaters, as well as Digital and VOD, on February 7.
Here’s the synopsis:
