'The Comey Rule': First Teaser For Billy Ray & Showtime's Series With Brendan Gleeson As Trump & Jeff Daniels As Ex-FBI Director James Comey

Pick a Donald Trump scandal? Pick your poison cause there’s so damn many of them. But the one that arguably kicked-off everything, that led to the Mueller trial and the case for impeaching the President—which of course happened, even if the partisan Republicans didn’t vote to find him guilty—is the firing of Ex-FBI Director James Comey. It’s been one of the many, many firings during the chaotic and unstable four-year, hopefully, one-term Trump presidency and repeat offense: anytime someone ruled in a decision that wasn’t in favor to Trump or not as “loyal” as the presidential crime mafia boss would like, he fired them. But Comey was an ugly one that really sent the Trump admin, already bungling its way through its first term into a major tailspin that it’s barely recovered from. Cue: “The Comedy Rule,” a Showtime series from writer/director Billy Ray, known for his political and docu-journalistic films such as “State Of Play,” “Captain Phillips,” “Shattered Glass,” and “Breach” among many others.

So, in “The Comey Rule,” a limited-series for Showtime, Ray looks at the build-up, event, and aftermath of the James Comey firing and everything it’s done to the president and presidency.  The casting is pretty stellar and top shelf and includes many great actors playing current political figures you know: Jeff Daniels as James Comey, Brendan Gleeson as President Donald Trump, Michael Kelly as Andrew McCabe, Jennifer Ehle as Patrice Comey, Holly Hunter as Sally Yates, Peter Coyote as Robert Mueller, Steven Pasquale as Peter Strzok, Oona Chaplin as Lisa Page, Scoot McNairy as Rod Rosenstein, William Sadler as Michael Flynn and many many more. Here’s the official synopsis:

Based on Comey’s No. 1 New York Times bestselling book A Higher Loyalty and more than a year of additional interviews with a number of key principals, THE COMEY RULE is an immersive, behind-the-headlines account of the historically turbulent events surrounding the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath, which divided a nation. THE COMEY RULE is not a biopic of one man, but is instead the story of two powerful figures, Comey and Trump, whose strikingly different personalities, ethics and loyalties put them on a collision course. Starring Jeff Daniels and Brendan Gleeson. Watch the premiere on September 27 on SHOWTIME.

The real question, however: Isn’t the Comey drama old hat and kind of quaint by now? Impeachment has come and gone and Trump and his administration have been riddled by embarrassing and shameful scandals, one after another on and on and on. I’ll point to this: while it was good and overlooked, it felt like not a soul watched Showtime’s somewhat similar “The Loudest Voice” show about Fox News mastermind Roger Ailes. It took came from great filmmakers and included top-shelf actors. And it had zero buzz, was overlooked by Emmys and Golden Globes, was never once mentioned on social media, and felt like it had zero ratings.  These kinds of shows feel like the kinds of things American doesn’t want to watch because it is currently living it, no thanks! Well, Showtime is certainly betting otherwise. “The Comey Rule” premieres September 27 on the cable channel. Watch the first trailer below and check out first look photos from Vanity Fair.
