‘Creature Commandos’ Trailer: James Gunn’s Animated Series Kicks Off His DC Studios Universe In December

You know the deal by now. James Gunn and Peter Safran were named the co-CEOs of DC Studios in early 2023, and they basically dismantled and tore down the entire pre-existing DC Universe. That is, aside from what Gunn had already built during his DC tenure: elements of “The Suicide Squad,” he wanted to keep and “Peacemaker.” His new DC Studios kicks off in earnest in December with “Creature Commandos,” an animated series that’s definitely connected to the aforementioned remnants of Gunn’s DC past.

The first voice you hear in the new trailer is that of Amanda Waller, the same ‘Suicide Squad’ character played by Viola Davis, and it quickly kicks off the premise. With “The Suicide Squad” off the table and grounded for now, Waller turns to an even more extreme set of villains for her black ops government’s dirty work by using creatures and monsters— the “Creature Commands,” led by Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo).

Written and executive produced by James Gunn, the new trailer was unveiled during a panel hosted at New York Comic Con. The seven-episode series debuts Thursday, December 5, on Max, followed by one new episode weekly through January 16.

Beyond Davis and Grillo, Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot & Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, and Indira Varma as The Bride are also doing voice work in the series.

Here’s the official synopsis:

CREATURE COMMANDOS tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails… they’re your last, worst option.

Additional executive producers on the series include Peter Safran, Dean Lorey, and Sam Register; Rick Morales serves as a supervising producer. With projects like “Superman,” “Supergirl,” and “Green Lantern” in the works, Gunn’s DC Studios is tipped to kick off soon, but it all starts near the end of this year with “Creature Commandos.” Watch the new trailer below.
