'Cuckoo' Teaser: Horror Film Starring 'Euphoria' Star Hunter Schafer & Dan Stevens Hits Theaters In May

So when is “Euphoria” Season 3 hitting HBO? The network confirmed last November it won’t be until 2025, so in the meantime, fans will need to see their favorite young actors from the show star in other things. Zendaya has a couple of things coming out this calendar year: “Dune: Part Two” and “Challengers,” maybe you’ve heard of them. And Jacob Elordi has a few things in the pipeline, including “Dr. Frankenstein,” filming now.

But what about Hunter Schafer, who plays Jules? After a supporting role in “The Hunger Games: A Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes” last year, she’ll star in “Cuckoo,” the sophomore feature of German horror director Tilman Singer. In the film, Schafer plays Gretchen, an American teen who goes abroad to live with her father in the German Alps with his new family. But Gretchen’s new home doesn’t feel right from the start, leading to some dark family secrets getting revealed.

Here’s an official synopsis for “Cuckoo,” courtesy of NEON:

Reluctantly, 17-year-old Gretchen leaves her American home to live with her father, who has just moved into a resort in the German Alps with his new family. Arriving at their future residence, they are greeted by Mr. König, her father’s boss, who takes an inexplicable interest in Gretchen’s mute half-sister Alma. Something doesn’t seem right in this tranquil vacation paradise. Gretchen is plagued by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family.

Along with Schafer, “Cuckoo” also stars Dan Stevens, Jessica Henwick, Jan Bluthardt, Martin Csokas, Greta Fernández, and Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey. Along with directing, Singer also writes the script for “Cuckoo,” as he did on his debut feature film, 2018‘s possession thriller “LUZ.” Singer shot “Cuckoo” on location in Germany last year.

“Cuckoo” has its world premiere at the Berlinale later this month on February 16. Then it screens at SXSW in Austin on March 14, 2024. Neon has “Cuckoo” slotted for a US theatrical release starting May 3.

So, will “Cuckoo” turn Hunter Schafer into another hot young actor in the horror genre, and will Singer’s sophomore feature be a breakout mainstream hit? Find out when the film arrives in theaters this Spring. Watch a teaser for “Cuckoo” below.
