It’s not a secret that “Suicide Squad” was a fraught production. Not unlike another movie opening this weekend, the anti-superhero movie went through extensive reshoots, and even saw Warner Bros. and director David Ayer cutting their own versions of the movie, before meeting in the middle and delivering the film you saw in theaters. While nothing got hostile in public, you might think that the studio and director might not be in a big rush to work together again, but you’d be wrong.
Ayer will be heading back into the DC Films universe, directing “Suicide Squad” star Margot Robbie in “Gotham City Sirens.” This is the Harley Quinn driven spinoff that has been developing throughout the year, and has Robbie serving as the producer (which might explain why Ayer is back in the director’s chair, given he tends to develop great collaborative relationships with his actors). Geneva Robertson-Dworet (the upcoming “Tomb Raider” reboot, and the developing “Sherlock Holmes 3″) is writing the script for this one which will bring together the female villains of the DC universe which could include Poison Ivy and Catwoman. No word on the possibility of heroes Batgirl and Birds Of Prey appearing, though they were mentioned in early reports.
There’s no timeline for the movie, but I will seriously not be surprised if something like “Cyborg” is pushed back or taken off the table entirely to make room for this project. Even more, THR reveals that a “Deadshot” movie and “Suicide Squad” sequel are in development, but those are in early stages at the moment.
You would think that DC Films might’ve learned a lesson after two films that this year that crammed too many characters into poorly written movies that didn’t do any of the heroes or villains justice. But I suppose box office receipts did the talking, and they are going to bat again with another movie stuffed with new baddies to discover.
