After the “Twilight” movie series culminated in November 2012 with “Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” co-stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson worked hard to leave their teen-romance roles behind. And they’ve been highly successful at it for the past ten years. Both actors have become two of cinema’s premier talents, working with some of the industry’s most challenging directors.
Since their “Twilight” days, the only director the pair has both worked with is Canadian body-horror maestro David Cronenberg. Pattison worked on a pair of Cronenberg’s films, “Cosmopolis” and “Maps To The Stars,” in 2012 and 2014, respectively, while Stewart stars in the upcoming “Crimes Of The Future,” out this Friday. But what if Pattinson and Stewart starred in a Cronenberg film together? In an interview with World Of Reel at Cannes last week, Cronenberg unveiled he has something in mind for the duo, but it’s only in the theoretical phase for now. And it wouldn’t happen any time soon, as he’ll be busy with “The Shrouds” early next year.
“It was Robert who actually introduced me to Kristen. They have developed beautifully, separately, as actors,” he explained. “Making arthouse movies and successfully carrying that off. Kristen and I had a great time, and Rob and I had a great time. For me, yeah, I can definitely think of a movie or idea, that would be great to have them both together. I don’t want to get into it because it wouldn’t be my next movie, however, it might be problematic since fans might expect a certain kind of relationship and that would get in the way of creating new characters for them. So, I have a strange feeling that might be problematic, so it’s only theoretical for now.”
It’s been almost a decade since the last “Twilight” movie, so it’s safe to say moviegoers no longer immediately associate Stewart and Pattinson with “Twilight,” much less each other. Still, their history together would play into a new team-up, and that’s something Cronenberg would undoubtedly dissect. Whether that would be problematic or not is up for debate.
So, what could Cronenberg’s idea for Stewart and Pattinson be? Given the director, it’s bound to be visceral and deeply weird, but that’s what Cronenberg does best. “Crimes Of The Future” comes out in US theaters on June 3. Read our review of the film here.
