According to Jeff Wells, Josh Brolin (to be seen as George Dubya Bush in next weekends’ ‘W.’) has signed a deal to star in the Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor directed “Jonah Hex,” based on the DC comic of the same title released for the first time as a standalone in 1977, for Warner Bros. Brolin, most certainly on a roll career wise picking diverse and interesting roles consistently (and finally getting noticed for it), will play the rugged, disfigured Hex, a gunslinger come ruthless bounty hunter according to Well’s report.
Actor Thomas Jane was evidently desperate for the role, he even did a photo shoot of himself as Hex but he didn’t get the part. Brolin can kick it as a badass, he can handle a gun like it’s going out of style and we would certainly rather see him give a little depth to this complex character – we think he’s more capable than most other actors out there at the moment who haven’t already been involved in a comic book adaptation thus far.
Very much a western at heart, the directors are aiming to infuse the story with supernatural/science fiction overtones with “CG up the wazoo,” with the presumable hopes of kicking off a franchise, because, sadly, the world seems to have forgotten just how cool cowboys once were – before wimps like Spiderman & Co. stole their thunder. Let’s hope they don’t throw away all the gritty mentality of the story in favor of a cleaner, more audience friendly lackluster film, because that is against absolutely everything Jonah Hex stands for. Playlist note: Brolin, don’t do it, you’ve got better roles and your career is on the crazy upswing. Why waste time with a character that rates just above Ghost Rider on the sub-par comic-book character scale. Don’t do it, bro. Also, let’s not get too excited even Brolin’s rep denied that Brolin was taking the role to Jeffrey Wells, but he insists its true.
