Got a Tip?

‘Deep Cuts’: Saoirse Ronan & Austin Butler To Star In Sean Durkin’s ‘The Iron Claw’ Follow-Up At A24

What are A24 and Sean Durkin cooking up next after the success of 2023’s “The Iron Claw“? Deadline reports that Durkin will adapt Holly Brickley‘s debut novel “Deep Cuts” for the big screen, and he’s got quite a pair of leads to star: Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler.

Set in the 2000s, “Deep Cuts” follows two music-obsessed twentysomethings as they fall in love and navigate the messy realities of ambition and adulthood. Brickley’s novel only hit bookstore shelves on Tuesday via Crown Publishing, but studios greenlighting film adaptations of books not yet published is the norm these days.  Zachary Wigon and NEON set up “Victorian Psycho before that book was released, and James Gray and United Artists did the same with Peter Swanson‘s thriller “Kill Your Darlings.”

Durkin plans to adapt Brickley’s novel along with directing, while Ronan is on board to produce. Other producers on the project include Ronald Bronstein, Eli Bush, and Josh Safdie via Central.

Expect all eyes to be on “Deep Cuts” once it hits theaters. Durkin’s “The Iron Claw” was a late hit in 2023, with Zac Efron and Jeremy Allan White‘s performances getting lots of love from critics. Ronan and Butler certainly have the chops to do the same. Add in Durkin’s directorial resume, which includes his 2011 debut “Martha Marcy May Marlene” and the criminally underseen “The Nest” from 2022, and “Deep Cuts” has the recipe to be another awards contender for A24.

Ronan starred in “The Outrun” and Steve McQueen‘s “Blitz” last year, with the comedic thriller “Bad Apples” on the way. As for Butler, he also had a busy 2024, which included “Dune: Part Two” and “The Bike Riders,” as well as the Apple TV+ limited series “Masters Of The Air.” He stars next in Darren Aronofsky‘s “Caught Stealing,” which hits theaters on August 29.

Stay tuned for when Durkin starts shooting “Deep Cuts,” which will likely get a 2026 theatrical release.
