Last year, the talk of Tinsel Town was the infamous defamation between between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, the most viral trial in recent memory. It’s arguably the most viral court course of all time, given how quickly clips of testimony from the proceedings hit social media online. For better or worse, everyone had an opinion about this trial, from influencers to anonymous Reddit users.

Was Depp v. Heard a bigger phenomenon than the O.J. Simpson trial? Probably not. But given the bandwidth supplied by social media, it’s a celebrity trial like no other. And Netflix has a new doc all about it: “Depp v. Heard,” set to premiere on the streamer next month.

Depp v Heard examines the infamous defamation case that captured the world’s attention as the first Trial by TikTok, and questions the nature of truth and the role it plays in our modern society.
Director Emma Cooper went through 200 hours of trial coverage for the docuseries, including testimony that was obviously littered with lies told under oath from both parties. The three-part series will follow the case from Amber Heard’s op-ed in the Washington Post that claimed Depp abused her through the court cast, where the public slowly turned on Heard to side with Depp. The trial ended with Heard owing her ex-husband $15 million, although that really shouldn’t be considered a victory for Depp. He remains, like Heard, persona non grata in Hollywood, with this stateside acting career more or less over.
It’s also worth mentioning that Netflix hasn’t promoted “Depp v. Heard” at all in the lead-up to its premiere. Perhaps because it’s bad optics to promote a series about a couple of narcissists who made their marital quibbles a public scandal? Netflix probably doesn’t want to look bad even by proximity. But this trial was the 2022’s juiciest Hollywood story, so it makes sense for the streamer to make a follow-up docuseries about it. And let’s face it: plenty of people still want to see more muck raked up about this embarrassing situation.
