‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Teaser: TV’s Favorite Fictional Serial Killer Returns In A Prequel Series On Showtime & Paramount+ This December

Is a “Dexter” prequel series what TV really needs right now? Debate on that will rage on, but that’s what Showtime and Paramount+ will supply subscribers to close out their 2024 programming. Set in the early ’90s, “Dexter: Original Sin” follows TV’s favorite fictional serial killer as a young man learning how to operate in the Code his father Harry made for him.  Channeling one’s inner darkness is equivalent to growing pains, right?

Here’s an official synopsis for “Dexter: Original Sin,” courtesy of Showtime:

Set in 1991 Miami, DEXTER: ORIGINAL SIN follows Dexter as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry, he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.  

Patrick Gibson stars as Dexter in the new series, with Christian Slater as his father, Harry. The show also stars Patrick Dempsey, Molly Brown, James Martinez, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, and Reno Wilson. Also of note: Sarah Michelle Gellar will star in a special guest role.  Michael C. Hall also returns, albeit only to provide Dexter’s iconic inner monologue.

Clyde Phillips executive produces “Dexter: Original Sin” with Scott Reynolds, Hall, Mary Leah Sutton, Tony Hernandez, and Lilly Burns. Michael Lehmann series as directing executive producer. Robert Lloyd Lewis produces the series. “Dexter: Original Sin” is a Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios production.  Gary Levine and Urooj Sharif oversee the series creative for Showtime, with Tara Power on board as production supervisor.

So will there be an audience for “Dexter: Original Sin”?  There better be: Showtime already has a sequel to 2021’s limited series “Dexter: New Blood” in the works titled “Dexter: Resurrection.” The prequel series premieres on Showtime on December 13, and Paramount+ on December 15.
