Diego Luna Evasively Addresses The Rumor He’s Up For A Lead ‘Fantastic Four’ Role

We’re in the holiday break, so we’ll be slightly more open to covering some loose talk about rumors—at least if those involved address them, which is the case here. Diego Luna’s obviously had a banner year after Lucasfilm’s hit “Star Wars” series, “Andor.” And the loose internet talk of late is that Luna is being considered for the lead role in Marvel’s upcoming “Fantastic Four” the team’s stretchy leader and scientist Reed Richards.

No cast names have been revealed, but we know Matt Shakman (“Wandavision”) is directing, and the movie has a February 14, 2025, release date. But on Kristian Harloff’s The Sith Council podcast interview show, the host directly asked Luna about the Marvel of it all and potentially playing Reed Richards at the end of his long “Andor”-centered interview.

The responses weren’t denials exactly, and to see it from Luna’s face—maybe not the greatest poker player alive—well, we wouldn’t at all say he’s lying. Still, we also wouldn’t be surprised if the rumors that the Mexican actors had exploratory conversations with Marvel are true. Maybe at best, you could describe his answers as an evasive dodge for now.

At first, Luna suggested that maybe rumors take on a life of themselves. “I just like the… I was talking about that this morning like the rumors,” he explained. “When you become part of rumors if half of the rumors were real, you know? It’s just incredible the amount of stuff that I see now out there.”

Then Luna suggested he’d probably be too busy with “Andor,” which is now shooting a second season, to join a Marvel film, specifically “Fantastic Four.”

“The only thing I can tell you is that, for the next two years, I’m busy. In two years, we’ll see if what I want to do is even film. Until 2024, I’m going to be doing [‘Andor’].”

Asked if he likes the character of Reed Richards, Luna just laughed and seemingly signaled he wouldn’t be talking about this any further.

It always bothers us when movie sites suggest actors are lying, but we will say this. “Andor” showrunner/creator Tony Gilroy has said, or implied, that filming on “Andor” will be done sometime in the spring of 2023, probably something like a six to nine-month shoot. And yes, Luna is a producer; they’ll be reshoots, ADR, pick-ups, etc. But “Fantastic Four” likely wouldn’t shoot until the end of 2023 or early 2024, and if all parties involved wanted to make it work, they probably could. That said, apparently, several actors are in the mix for the role of Richards—the more responsible, staid team leader as opposed to the more irresponsible, hot-headed Human Torch and The Thing—so much could happen in the next few months. Stay tuned; we’ll probably get legitimate “Fantastic Four” casting news by mid-2023. “Andor” is expected sometime in 2024, and maybe not until at least the middle of the year.

By the way, we interviewed Luna earlier this year for “Andor,” and you should definitely check that interview out.
