Normally, behind-the-scenes documentaries are fluff added to a Blu-ray to help drive up sales. They very rarely contain anything other than cast interviews that rave about the production, and filmmakers talking about how everything went so well. The “docs” are basically 15 to 20-minute long commercials. “The Director and the Jedi” hopes to change that assumption. And in the trailer for the feature-length documentary, we finally get a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most talked about films of 2017, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
It seems like the general sentiment for ‘The Last Jedi’ falls into two camps. You have the general audiences, including most critics, that loved the film, giving ‘The Last Jedi’ some of the best reviews ever for a “Star Wars” film. Then you have a very loud, but seemingly devoted, fanbase that absolutely hates the film and curses the name Rian Johnson. While it doesn’t look like “The Director and the Jedi” is going to cover any of the fan reaction to the film, the doc does seem to shed light on how Johnson came up with his controversial ideas, and how one of the most complex “Star Wars” films came into existence.

And it has to be said that there is definitely a feeling that portions of the trailer were cut in such a way to focus on the Luke Skywalker debate. Luke’s characterization in ‘The Last Jedi’ is the main point of contention between fans, including Mark Hamill himself, and Johnson. But in the voice-over and the final moment of the trailer, it looks like we’ll get to see that Hamill and Johnson worked very well together, and generally agreed with what was going on.
Now, how much of that harmony is just for the cameras, and how much Hamill kept his true feelings to himself during production is up for debate. But at least in the footage, it looks like everyone was generally really excited about Johnson’s vision.
“The Director and the Jedi” is included in the special features for the upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” Blu-ray and digital release. Included in the release, as we previously reported, is a music-only cut of the film. It’s clear that some real thought was put into this release.
