Fantasy films are made for the suspension of disbelief, where logic is thrown away for the sake of enjoyment. Well, how about bringing a fantasy world and mixing it with our real world, well that’s exactly what “Onward” looks set to do.
The film is directed and written by Dan Scanlon, who has been part of the Disney and Pixar setup for well over 13 years now, having a hand in several House of Mouse films including “Cars,” “Brave” and “Monsters University,” the latter he directed back in 2013.

The teaser that was released back in May showed us the brothers are elves, the family pet is a dragon, a minotaur going for a run and a commercial airline plane soaring over the idyllic fantasy landscape. Quite a normal world that is filled with more mythical creatures than you can imagine.

But that cute and adorable animation style we have come so used to with Pixar will steal the show. It is easy to tell it is a Pixar film, even without their name above the logo.
What will come as no shock to you though is that the story is set to be another tearjerker. Disney and Pixar love to set off the waterworks and this film will apparently be no different.

Scanlon spoke to TotalFilm about how his father passed away when he was only a year old and how he is exploring that. He said, “That just felt like a story that was a big part of my life that I wanted to dive into,” while also saying his father was a “kind of mythic and almost magical.”
The story focuses on brothers Ian and Barley Lightfoot, played by Tom Holland (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”) and Chris Pratt (“Guardians Of The Galaxy”), where they are sent on an errand/quest to see if there is still magic out there. Scanlon is linking this film to his own tragedy, and says the film is for “people when they think about their family history or mysteries that they may have in their life.”
Alongside Pratt and Holland will also be Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Seinfeld”), Octavia Spencer (“Hidden Figures”) and John Ratzenberger (“Toy Story”).
Here is the synopsis:
Set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot, go on a journey to discover if there is still a little magic left out there in order to spend one last day with their father, who died when they were too young to remember him.
The Disney heartbreaker will be out in cinemas on March 6, 2020. Watch the new trailer below.
