Created by comedic powerhouse Sharon Horgan (Amazon‘s “Catastrophe” — watch it) and starring two long time beloved actors with Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church, the first season of “Divorce” didn’t bring the hype that HBO seemed to be betting on. With Parker back on the channel that brought her to the spotlight with the immeasurably inspiration “Sex and the City” (its legacy somewhat tarnished due to the ill conceived film spin offs), it should’ve been a sure fire bet, drawing in both her older crowd, fans of the series, and newbies who were intrigued in seeing an “American Sweetheart” type play someone with a bit more of a foul tongue. Instead, Church ended up being the arguable break out, delivering a physical and hilarious performance, and Horgan continued to demonstrate her venomous humor as a creator.
Season two return and reintroduces us to the characters as they continue to be in a transition period in their lives. The theme of the season seems to be “now what” as Frances and her ex Robert continue to become used to their lives apart. Here’s the synopsis:
Season two finds Frances (Parker) and her ex-husband, Robert (Thomas Haden Church), dealing with the aftermath of their explosive separation and learning to rebuild their lives.
With a playful tone and a supporting cast that includes Molly Shannon, Talia Balsam, Tracy Letts, Sterling Jerins and Charlie Kilgore, there’s an embarrassment of riches on display. Having grown increasingly confident as season one progressed, hopefully season two of “Divorce” will embrace that self-assuredness for a stable and consistently hilarious series that isn’t afraid of the dark humor, drama or absurdity that comes along with their premise. It’s hard not to root for it with the people they have on board.
“Divorce” returns on Sunday, January 14th.
