Before Quentin Tarantino filched the name for “Django Unchained,” another “Django” ruled the Western genre: the 1966 spaghetti western with Franco Nero. The film was so popular it spawned over 30 unofficial “sequels” before Nero reprised the role in 1987’s “Django Strikes Again.” Now, the original film gets a series treatment, courtesy of Sky Original.

But the new series isn’t a pure remake of Sergio Corbucci‘s 1966 film, itself a retelling of Akira Kurosawa‘s “Yojimbo” set in the Old West. Instead, “Django” follows its titular drifter as he searches for his daughter Sarah, finding her in the frontier town of New Babylon, which has demons of its own.
Matthias Schoenaerts stars as Django, while Lisa Vicari plays Sarah. Noomi Rapace is the series villain, focused on destroying Nicholas Pinnock‘s John Ellis, New Babylon’s founder. The series also stars Jyuddah Jaymes, Eric Kole, Benny O. Arthur, Tom Austen, and Abigal Thorn.
Leonardo Fasoli and Maddalena Ravagli are the showrunners on “Django.” They also co-write the show with Max Hurwitz.
There’s no release date yet for “Django,” but expect it on Sky before the year ends. Watch a teaser for the series below.
