In terms of the most star-studded Oscar season release of 2021, there’s no denying the appeal of Adam McKay’s satire, “Don’t Look Up.” The cast is led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, but there’s a solid ensemble that would rival that of any film from Quentin Tarantino or Wes Anderson. So, obviously, you had to expect film fans to anxiously await the early word on whether or not “Don’t Look Up” is all superficial or if the Netflix film actually has those awards season chops. Well, judging by the early reactions from a screening held last night, “Don’t Look Up” is very much the Oscars contender folks were thinking it would be.

Obviously, we should start the reactions with one from The Playlist’s own Gregory Ellwood, who tweeted, “‘Don’t Look Up’ has some smart ideas and some obvious ones, but despite its length and meandering nature it’s certainly compelling? Not sure it’s as funny as it wants to be. The drama is much more interesting. Doesn’t balance the tones well. Ariana Grande has a fun song in it.”
His reaction seems to be much more mixed than many other folks who were able to catch the film at a very early screening.
The Playlist contributor Tomris Laffly found the film to be much more enjoyable, tweeting, “DON’T LOOK UP is the Wag The Dog-meets-Deep Impact satire I didn’t know I needed in my life. Hilarious, and absolutely the best target Adam McKay’s manic impulses has ever found. Ever. (Yeah, it’s his best movie by a healthy margin.) Great stuff!”
Also raving is THR’s Scott Feinberg, who said, “DON’T LOOK UP is a present-day DR. STRANGELOVE — a funny, sickening, brilliant reminder of just how fucked the world will be if we don’t quickly get our shit together. Great perfs by one of the best casts ever assembled. Hilarious song from Ariana/Cudi. Stay thru the end credits!”
“Don’t Look Up” is set to hit select theaters on December 10 before hitting Netflix on December 24. You can see a selection of the various social media reactions to “Don’t Look Up” below:
