‘Don’t Look Up’: Jennifer Lawrence Was Told By Adam McKay To Smoke Weed Before A Scene With Meryl Streep

Over the years, we hear stories of famous actors going to extreme lengths to get into character. Daniel Day-Lewis has always been notorious for going “method” for his performances. The same for Jared Leto, also. And this fall, we’ve seen the somewhat ridiculous stories about the lengths Lady Gaga went to get into her “House of Gucci” mindset. But now, we have Jennifer Lawrence, who went method in a way that none of the aforementioned actors probably have before on the set of her new film “Don’t Look Up.” Well, at least not in a way prescribed by the director.

An revealed in a new interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Jennifer Lawrence talked about how her scientist character, Kate Dibiasky, partakes in smoking marijuana in scenes from the new film, “Don’t Look Up.” And to help get into character, per the suggestion of filmmaker Adam McKay, Lawrence was told that she could smoke a little before a scene, including one scene where she acted opposite Meryl Streep.

The unique form of method acting came about because Jennifer Lawrence’s character has been known to use weed to self-medicate when she’s anxious. Or as the actress put it, “Because my character was getting high in the movie.”

“So Jen was like, ‘Are you gonna throw me some improv?’ which we always do,” McKay said. “And I was like, ‘No, you can get high.'”

And instead of the improv, Lawrence got high and then became the butt of some jokes from the rest of the cast.

“I was a real target,” she added. “Everyone was fucking with me… I guess because I was high. Easy to fuck with.”

Will this form of method acting result in a performance that could be in the Oscar conversation? And if so, and if she wins, will she thank the particular strain of weed? We’ll have to find out after “Don’t Look Up” arrives in select theaters on December 10 and on Netflix on December 24.
