Drew Barymore's Roller Derby Film, 'Whip It' With Ellen Page Gets A Trailer

Last week, we saw new photos from Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, the roller derby rom com, “Whip It” starring Ellen Page and now a full-on trailer has arrived via Yahoo.

Also featured in the film are Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis, rapper Eve, Zoe Bell (“Death Proof”), Alia Shawkat, Ari Graynor (“Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist”), Jimmy Fallon, Daniel Stern, and Barrymore herself, while musician Landon Pigg will stretch himself by playing a musician who becomes Page’s love interest. Regular Wes Anderson collaborator Mark Mothersbaugh — who ironically is the front man for original “Whip It” band Devo — was also set to compose the film’s score before being fired over creative differences, but Randall Poster, Anderson’s music supervisor, is still on board here. Also notice Luke & Owen Wilson’s brother Andrew Wilson as the referee if you want to make another Anderson connection.

The film focuses on Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page), a rebellious 17 year old Texas teenager who signs up to play the brutal and sexy female sport of roller derby against her mother’s (Gay Harden) will, finding friendship and freedom among the bruises and falls.

We hate to say it because it’s banal, but someone will so fuck it: This year’s “Juno”? Mmm, probably not, but a lot of the teen-centered rom-com’s this year we don’t have a ton of faith in (“Jennifer’s Body” looks kind of terrible), and this does not look deplorable from the looks of the trailer.

“Whip It!” is due in theaters October 9th. The trailer features Weezer’s “Pork & Beans” and Peaches’ “Boys Wanna Be Here,” which makes sense as we’ve already noted that she’ll be part of the soundtrack (more details here).
