Got a Tip?

‘Red Notice’ Director Rawson Marshall Thurber Will Write & Direct The ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Series Pilot

In the wake of the juggernaut success of “Game of Thrones,” the public’s hunger for fantasy on the small screen seemingly hasn’t been bigger, Netflix has put a lot of energy into fleshing out the “The Witcher” universe and we’ve seen Amazon pour a mountain’s worth of cash into their “Lord of The Rings” prequel series alongside a show based on Robert Jordan‘s beloved “Wheel of Time” novels. Hasbro‘s pen and paper fantasy game “Dungeons & Dragons” has been slowly trying to get a new television series together as well.

eOne has been overseeing multiple “Dungeons & Dragons” projects and according to Deadline is moving forward with a pilot for a new series. The report reveals that the studio has selected “Red Notice” filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber to oversee the show by executive producing, writing, and directing the hourlong pilot. He’s still attached to make two “Red Notice” sequels at Netflix, but it sounds like the pilot is going to be a priority.

The world of “Dungeons & Dragons” is full of monsters and warriors, but during the game, a Dungeon Master is the main storyteller and allows creatives to do whatever they want within the setting. Players are encouraged to customize their characters to make them unique. It previously spawned a cartoon series for children that aired between 1983-1985 and saw a messy live-action film in 2000 with some of the worst special effects ever seen in a major studio film.

A new feature film reboot at Paramount is on the horizon with Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Rege-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant leading a cast that was assembled by “Game Night” directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. The live-action movie is set to be released in theaters on March 3, 2023, however, eOne hasn’t clarified if the shows will be directly connected to it or will take place in their own splinter television universe.

John Wick” creator Derek Kolstad (“The Falcon & The Winter Soldier“) was also developing another “Dungeons & Dragons” series for eOne, but it’s unclear the status of that one and if the busy writer is still grinding away on it.

The next big step is finding a home for the pilot as there is interest from “multiple buyers.”
