‘Easter Sunday’ Trailer: New Comedy From Jo Koy & Jay Chandrasekhar Promises A Funny “Filipino Superbowl” This Summer

“Easter Sunday is like the Filipino Superbowl,” is one of the standout lines said by critically acclaimed comedian Jo Koy (“Jo Koy: Comin’ in Hot”) in a trailer for the forthcoming comedy “Easter Sunday.” Koy finds himself in the middle of a riotous family gathering in the latest offering from Jay Chandrasekhar, who is best known for his work with the Broken Lizard comedy troupe, who brought us the cult classic “Super Troopers” in 2001. Koy stars as a middle-aged man visiting his family for the Easter holiday, soon finding himself embroiled in encounters with old flames-turned-police officers, having to ease tensions between his mother and his aunt, and helping out a cousin who owes a lot of money to some unsavory characters, amongst other raucous offerings.

Described as a “love letter” to the Filipino community, the film’s trailer aims to deliver more than just one-liners, as it is underlined by a display of the strong bonds and togetherness found in immigrant communities. The story for “Easter Sunday” was conceived by Ken Cheng, also known for being a professional poker player, and the screenplay was written by Cheng and Kate Angelo. The film is also the first directorial outing for Chandrasekhar since “Super Troopers 2” was released in 2018.

Set to be released on August 5, “Easter Sunday” will be distributed by Universal Pictures domestically, while Amblin Partners and Universal will share international distribution rights.
