When Scott Derrickson departed the production of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” fans were concerned the film would be ditching the more interesting elements that he established in the first film and going with a more Marvel-y tone. You know the one we’re talking about. Though no one would call the original “Doctor Strange” a “horror” film, there were still some elements from Derrickson’s earlier work that came through in the visuals. Well, then Marvel Studios brought on Sam Raimi to take over, and according to one of the sequel’s stars, the horror aspect is still alive and well.
Speaking to Glamour, Elizabeth Olsen, who recently appeared in the hit Marvel Studios Disney+ series, “WandaVision,” gave a hint about the vibe fans will be able to expect from the forthcoming “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” And to the delight of fans, it would appear as if Marvel Studios is retaining that horror element with Raimi that some were expecting to be gone from the sequel.
“It’s a bonkers movie, they’re definitely going for that horror show vibe,” Olsen said.
There’s a lot of hype surrounding “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Not only is it the sequel to the hit blockbuster that starred Benedict Cumberbatch as the title hero, but since that film’s 2017 release, the character and the Marvel Cinematic Universe has risen to even greater heights. Doctor Strange appeared in both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” as well as a little cameo in “Thor: Ragnarok.” Fans are now well-versed in the lore of the Sorcerer Supreme. Just in time for the sequel to raise the stakes even further.

‘Multiverse of Madness’ is expected, as the title implies, to show a multitude of various alternate universes, giving fans interesting peeks into what other versions of the MCU might exist. In addition, the cast is expanding with Olsen coming aboard, along with Xochitl Gomez debuting in the MCU as the fan-favorite America Chavez. Add to that the returns of Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, and you have a truly stacked cast.
But even with the scale of the sequel being blown up to a huge extent and the cast growing with more Marvel-y aspects, if you are to believe Olsen, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is still going to retain that horror vibe that fans know and love. The film is currently expected to arrive in theaters on March 25, 2022.
