What does it take to pursue one’s happiness? Four women find themselves on various paths to contentment in “Emilia Perez.” The musical comedy sees a lawyer set on several unique tasks by a cartel boss. Years later, she discovers the connection to her former client is far more complicated. ‘Perez’ hails from director Jacques Audiard. Its cast includes Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, and Edgar Ramírez.
The film was a buzzed-about addition to the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. It would go on to win the Jury Prize as well as Best Performance By An Actress, the latter given to Gascón, Saldaña, Gomez, and Paz. Gomez once again proves to be a standout after making her mark on the Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building.” The Playlist’s Gregory Ellwood noted the actress and singer’s performance during his festival review. “Emilia” is also a showcase for Gomez, who arguably delivers the best dramatic performance of her career as a woman who has had her life taken from her,” the critic wrote.
The film’s official synopsis:
“From renegade auteur Jacques Audiard comes Emilia Pérez, an audacious fever dream that defies genres and expectations. Through liberating song and dance and bold visuals, this odyssey follows the journey of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. The fearsome cartel leader Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón) enlists Rita (Zoe Saldaña), an unappreciated lawyer stuck in a dead-end job, to help fake her death so that Emilia can finally live authentically as her true self. Written & directed by Audiard (Rust and Bone, A Prophet), the double Cannes-winning film also stars Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, and Edgar Ramírez.”
Nicolás Celis, Gary Farkas, Pauline Lamy, Jeremy Levinson, Masha Magonova, Vincent Maraval, and Delphine Tomson serve as executive producers on “Emilia Perez.” The film is set to play select theaters this fall before arriving on Netflix on November 12. Watch the new trailer below:
