Empire Big Screen ’11: Gareth Edwards Says Don’t Believe Everything You Read About Secret Sci-Fi Pic

Director Gareth Edwards could not be on a better run right now. With “Monsters” impressing folks on both sides of the ocean, the helmer is executive producing a sequel to the flick and he’s landed the director’s chair of the mother of all creature features, “Godzilla.”

But that’s not all. Just over a week ago, the internet buzzed a bit more loudly when reports circulated that the director was pitching a sci-fi film described as “a robot ‘Star Wars’ ” with the story following “a young human child (probably around 5 years old) and a robot who travel across the galaxy in search of mankind’s origin in a world void of humanity and filled with robots.” Well, we caught up with Edwards at Empire Big Screen and he stresses not believe everything you’re heard thus far about the film.

“I’m quite overly familiar with ‘Star Wars’ and I don’t remember it having robots in it,” he said about the rumored concept, chalking it all up an game of internet telephone that got out of hand. “This is the thing, we never said anything to anybody. Someone will hear a rumor about something, a journalist might speculate on it, and then another person will copy that story and quote that story, so they’ll put quotes in that speculation. And then someone will copy that story and quote the filmmaker as having said that. And so within a few things it became I’ve done some sort of announcement, and it was inaccurate what was written. But there’s no point in chasing it and trying to correct things, you just go insane on the internet.”

Asked to set the record straight about the movie, Edwards confirmed that some of what was said was true, but prefers to keep a veil on the project for now. “Tell you what I’ll do, I’ll make you promise. I won’t just tell you what it’s about, I’ll film it, and I’ll edit it, and we’ll put it on a massive screen, and we’ll show it to you,” he cheekily said. “It’s kind of like…if you say too much too early…it’s a bit like a woman’s who is pregnant, you’ve got to wait until three months down [before telling anybody]. Some of that stuff in there in that description, some of its true, and some of its inaccurate, like completely not the case. We’ll say something [more about it] when it’s best for the film. And I totally understand [the curiosity]; I’m flattered people give a crap enough to write anything.”

All this to say that Edwards’ film still seems to be taking shape for now and despite what has been “revealed” thus far, it’s likely to be something a bit different than what is being tossed around the interwebs right now.
