After fives years apart, it looks like The Coen Bros. are finally reunited. /Film reports (via Empire magazine) that Ethan Coen confirmed in a new interview that he and brother Joel Coen plan to work on a feature together soon. Will it be their next project? Ethan remained coy on that, instead focusing on his upcoming lesbian road comedy “Drive-Away Dolls,” which he co-wrote (and co-directed) with his wife, Tricia Cooke. The Coen-Cooke team has an upcoming film in the works, too, but it’s unclear if Ethan’s reunion with Joel will now supersede it.

Joel and Ethan last worked together nearly five years ago, on their Netflix Western anthology “The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs.” Since then, the brothers have worked apart from one another, with Joel directing “Macbeth” in 2021 and Ethan & Tricia doing their doc “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble In Mind” before “Drive-Away Dolls.” All told, the Coen have made 18 films together, almost all of them critically acclaimed. But as to what their next project together is, neither Coen Bros. has divulged anything specific.
As for “Drive-Away Dolls,” Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan star as two lesbian friends who take an impromptu roadtrip to Florida and get mixed up with all sort of kooky unsavory types. The film looks like a return to the madcap crime movies of the Coens’ earlier years. Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp, and Joey Slotnick also star. Oh, and so does Coen pal Matt Damon. “Drive-Away Dolls” hits US theaters on September 22, courtesy of Focus Features.
So, Coen Bros. fans, speculate away on what the filmmaking duo will do together for their reunion film. The pair have plenty of unmade projects over their nearly four-decade-long career together, but maybe they have something new up their sleeves? The Coens always play things close to the chest, so don’t expect either to give up details until they absolutely want to. But this remains good news all around: The Coen Bros. are back.
