This summer you’ll be meeting a wide variety of characters both at the multiplex and the arthouse, but few will be as distinct as the titular “Borgman.” Premiering at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, director Alex van Warmerdam‘s film went on to become highly buzzed on the festival circuit, and now the film is headed to theatres. And we’ve got a taste of the twisted world he’s put together.
Jan Bijvoet leads the film, playing an eerie vagrant who finds his way into the home of an upper class family and starts to take over their lives, with deadly consequences. When our Jessica Kiang saw it on the Croisette last year, she was taken with “Borgman,” calling it “caustic, surreal, creepy, and blackly funny,” and all of those notes are on display in this exclusive clip. Here we meet Borgman, who innocently asks to take a bath inside a well-maintained home, but once he’s rejected, he reveals more information that heightens the stakes considerably.
“Borgman” opens in NYC on June 6th at IFC Center and Lincoln Plaza, expanding further on June 13th and June 20th. Check out the clip below, along with a bonus clip providing another look at the movie.
