Exclusive: Clip Of Mahalia Jackson’s Great Performance On ‘Ed Sullivan Show’ From ‘Rejoice & Shout’

blankSpanning 200 years, there is probably no other form of music more rooted in America’s social, political and religious history than gospel music. Having a strong influence on blues and rock ‘n’ roll, no form of music has been as important either, and the upcoming documentary “Rejoice & Shout” will take viewers on a journey from where gospel came from, to where it is today.

We’ve got an exclusive clip from the film and if you had any doubt as to just how popular gospel music was at one time, just check out the legendary Mahalia Jackson‘s absolutely stunning performance on the “The Ed Sullivan Show.” It was one of her earliest appearances of national television and she pretty much tears the roof off the place with her powerful set of pipes. But she’s just one of the many gospel acts featured in “Rejoice & Shout” with Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Staple Singers, The Five Blind Boys Of Mississippi, The Golden Gate Quartet and more making appearances via archival footage. Director Don McGlynn — who has previously made documentaries on Art Pepper, Dexter Gordon, Charles Mingus and Howlin’ Wolf — sifted through photos, rare audio recordings, and hours of film appearances and TV performances to create what should be a real treat for gospel music fans.

The film opens in New York on June 3rd and expands to more cities throughout June and July. Check out the clip below.
